Girlfriends

Girlfriends is a popular American sitcom centered on the lives of successful African American women living in Los Angeles, California. The show was created by Mara Brock Akil, and premiered in September 2000 on UPN. After several years at the network on Mondays at 9:00, The CW moved Girlfriends to Sundays at 8:00 in October 2006. On October 9, 2006, Girlfriends, along with The CW's other African-American programs, moved back to Mondays. It now airs in its original timeslot.

The move was prompted by low ratings and a highly critical article in the Los Angeles Times by staff writer [reg Braxton in which Mara Brock Akil suggested that the network was neglecting its African-American programs at the expense of those with primarily white audiences, like Gilmore Girls.) Indeed, advertisements promoting the network's launch all but excluded Girlfriends and Brock's other program, The Game.

Current network promotions, even in "urban" markets, continue to feature the network's white programs at the expense of Girlfriends. The theme song to Girlfriends is sung by R&B artist Angie Stone. The show is now the third most-watched sitcom on The CW, behind Everybody Hates Chris and Reba
