Charlotte’s Week Ahead Weather: Tropical Storm Irma Brings Rain, Winds To North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC — North Carolina will begin to see heavy rain and gusty winds Monday reaching up to 43 mph and possibly leading to isolated tornadoes, state officials warned as Tropical Storm Irma continued its westward path through the southeast U.S.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, Irma was centered over the Florida panhandle and Georgia state line and creating tropical storm wind conditions for much of the southeast, including most of South Carolina. Tropical storm winds are between 39 and 73 mph.

For the Charlotte metro region and central North Carolina, Monday night winds will be from the east, between 23 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Here is NWS’ forecast for the Charlotte-metro region for the week of Sept. 11:

Today (Sept. 11)
Showers. High near 67. Breezy, with a northeast wind 14 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Tonight
Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog between 9pm and 5am. Low around 64. Windy, with an east wind 23 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Tuesday (Sept. 12)
Showers before 1pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 1pm and 3pm, then a chance of showers after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog between 7am and 8am. High near 77. East wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
Tuesday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Wednesday (Sept 13)
A 20 percent chance of showers after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Calm wind becoming south southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65.
Thursday (Sept. 14)
A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 80.
